Google Meet completely replaces the Duo calling app

Google has officially completed the migration from Duo to Meet, making Meet the company’s sole video calling service. After years of gradual integration, Duo’s legacy features and settings have now been fully removed, marking the end of Google Duo’s long transition.

With the shutdown of Duo’s legacy system, several popular features have disappeared. These include Knock Knock (live video previews of incoming calls), Family Mode, Mirror Mode, and Moments. Other functions such as Data Saving Mode and Low Light Mode have been replaced with updated Meet equivalents like Saver Mode and video lighting adjustment.

Google Meet now offers a unified set of tools across devices, including live captions, screen sharing, in-call chat, stackable effects, and cloud encryption. Privacy settings have also been streamlined, with users able to restrict calls to contacts only under Settings > General > Only contacts can call me.

On Google’s Nest smart displays, incoming group calls are supported, but outgoing group calls remain unavailable. This reflects Google’s focus on simplifying Meet’s integration across its hardware ecosystem.

The completion of Duo’s phase-out underscores Google’s strategy to consolidate its communication services into a single, consistent platform. With Meet now the sole video calling app, Google aims to deliver a more reliable and feature-rich experience while eliminating overlap between its products.
