Amazon is transforming Alexa from a standard voice assistant into a customizable companion. With the launch of Alexa+, the tech giant has introduced four new "Personality Styles," allowing users to decide whether their AI sounds like a no-nonsense assistant, a laid-back friend, or even a sarcastic wit. While the core capabilities of the AI remain the same, these updates change the "vibe" of every interaction, moving away from the one-size-fits-all digital voice of the past.
The four voices of Alexa+
Users can now toggle between four distinct moods depending on their preference:
Brief: For those who value efficiency above all else. This mode eliminates small talk and extra conversation, delivering facts and answers with "no-nonsense" speed.
Chill: Turns Alexa into an easygoing friend. Using a relaxed tone and breezy language, this style is designed for a low-pressure, conversational experience.
Sweet: Acting as your personal "cheerleader," this style responds with genuine warmth and enthusiasm, focusing on positivity and encouragement.
Sassy: The "edgiest" option, featuring razor-sharp wit and playful sarcasm. It is designed for users who enjoy entertaining banter and clever comebacks.

The science of 'Vibe': How it works
Creating these styles is more complex than just changing a few sentences. Amazon built the personalities using five interconnected dimensions to ensure the AI feels human and consistent:
Expressiveness: How much the AI talks (concise vs. verbose).
Emotional Openness: How "excited" it sounds (reserved vs. enthusiastic).
Formality: The level of professionalism (suit-and-tie vs. casual).
Directness: How it delivers news (diplomatic vs. blunt).
Humor: The level of comedy (subtle wit vs. overt sarcasm).
Sassy Alexa vs. Elon Musk’s Grok
The "Sassy" mode has drawn immediate comparisons to Elon Musk’s Grok, known for its rebellious humor. However, Amazon has set strict boundaries. Unlike Grok, "Sassy" Alexa will not engage in hate speech, sexual content, or illegal topics. It is designed to be "edgy" but never harmful.
To protect younger users, the Sassy style is automatically disabled if Amazon Kids mode is on. Adults must pass a security check in the Alexa app to activate the feature.
How to Change Your Alexa’s Personality
Ready to switch things up? You can change your settings in seconds:
- By Voice: Simply say, “Alexa, change your personality style” to your Echo device.
- Via the App: Go to Devices > Select your device > Device Settings > Alexa’s Personality Style.
- Customize the Voice: You can also pair these styles with eight different voice options found under the "Alexa’s Voice" menu in the app.
- Note: These styles are device-specific, so you’ll need to set them up for each Echo in your home if you want a consistent (or different) vibe in every room.
